storytelling to tackle the climate crisis

Coming of Age in these Changing Times

How should I tell my kids about the warming world?

The Climate Crisis gives parents a new task. How best to prepare their children for the changes that will define the world they will live in as adults? How to honestly explain the realities, but not overwhelm them?

Recently, psychiatrists and psychologists have pondered this new part of parenting.  What's most important is that kids know that their family is a part of the solution. Working with others in a supportive community, too, helps gives children the confidence to rise to this challenge.

The Santa Soaked Storytelling Workshops provide a positive framework for parents to introduce their kids to climate issues. Telling Santa's own story of his climate awareness creates the occasion for conversation. Families gather to see how they can help at home. It is a place to meet other families to share ideas, grow community, and organize to work on climate solutions together.

The Workshops:

The structure of the storytelling workshops is simple (see sidebar). It  can be adapted to whatever works best for your community. There are just a few "musts": These must be family-friendly and completely commerce-free. They must be open to all with a desire to deal with the climate crisis. They must be offered freely as a gift,  consistent with the Santa Soaked vision of uncommercialized holidays. There's a few "shoulds," too: They should be easy to organize and operate, as well as inexpensive to run. Most anyone should be able to do this. Just add friends &  family!

A Workshop with 7 Simple Steps:

The overview below sketches out the basics of what was field-tested this past holiday season:

  1. Introduction & Greeting
  2. The keynote climate story: Santa Soaked. Someone can dress up as Santa to tell his story!  Others can join in to voice the children's parts.
  3. Science overview: There's many resources, like this kid's guide from NASA. Got any local experts handy? Have them point out climate issues in the neighborhood.
  4. Break into groups of 10 or less for personal climate awareness/action storytelling. Each group appoints a spokesperson to report back.
  5.  Reconvene the larger group. The spokespersons share highlights.
  6. Open mic: groups nominate stories to share. Anyone is welcome to step forward and have their say.
  7. Outline how Santa Soaked operates through gifting, then close.
